With a prime position on the corner of Brunswick Street and Johnston Street, it’s no surprise that The Provincial Hotel is one of Fitzroy’s most popular bars. It gets especially busy at night during the weekend when it is perhaps best avoided.
The interior is nothing to rave about but it has a vintage feel and is slightly more spacious than some others in the area. They have the usual bar setup you would expect as well as lots of seating, a group function area, backyard area and a dining room so yes, food is served here.
There is something for everyone on their drink menu. The selection is fair and their prices are decent which is probably partly why Provincial is so popular. The food specials are a good deal (you can score a steak for $5 on Mondays). You’ll find your average pub food like burgers as well as more upscale fare including ribeye and chicken parmesan.
Along with food, they offer good music and you can watch televised sports games in the dining area. It’s a pleasant enough place, though a bit lacking in character: it’s actually somewhat bland by Fitzroy standards. It’s recently undergone some renovations which are, frankly, a bit “meh”. But there’s no denying it appeals to those who may feel uncomfortable in some of the better options nearby.
The Provincial Hotel is located at 299 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy: telephone (03) 9810 0042.
